Indoor/Outdoor Pool

Relax in our fabulous pool, which is enclosed and heated through the cool months and open to the warm ocean breeze in summer. We put the enclosure up around Columbus Day, when the evenings turn chilly, and take it down in May once the days are reliably above 75 degrees — so the pool is usable every day of the year. The shallow end of the pool is 3-4 feet deep and under a shady cover, while the 8-foot deep end of the pool is under the sun and stars.

Our pool is handicap-accessible, with an ADA-compliant ramp to allow easy access onto the pool deck, and an ADA-compliant lift to get you into the water.

It is open 8am to 10pm daily, and 8am to 9pm between Thanksgiving and Easter.

Covered, Indoor Hot Tub

Our hot tub is your ticket to total relaxation. The high-powered jets and therapeutic heat are the perfect end to a long day biking or hiking Assateague.

The whirlpool seats six and is located in the pool area. During the warm summer months, the hot tub is open to the ocean breezes. In the winter, the hot tub and the entire pool area are enclosed in greenhouse plastic and heated, from around Columbus Day until May. Hours are the same as the pool: 8am to 10pm, and 8am to 9pm between Thanksgiving and Easter.

Wild Ponies On-Site

Refuge Inn founder Don Leonard had a passion for ponies. He bought his first horse when he was 12, and they were a constant presence in his life from that point forward. He often said that the ponies were the reason for his success in life. His sons maintain his herd now, and they keep a few of their authentic Chincoteague ponies here at Refuge Inn for our guests to enjoy. The ponies are friendly, but wild-they love attention, but they really love to be fed corn and sweet feed. They'll come right over to the feed boxes to greet you. Just be sure to put the treats in the boxes provided.

Bike & Beach Rentals

Our on-site bicycle rental shop allows easy access to the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge and Assateague National Seashore. Stop by the Bike Depot and our friendly staff will adjust your seat, set you up with a map, and point you toward the ocean. Our smooth-riding, ultra-comfortable Beach Cruiser bicycles are only $5/hour or $20/day.

The Bike Depot also has all your beach needs covered-rental beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, and coolers- along with our essentials for sale including beach toys, bug spray, sunscreen, and cold bottled water.

A well-equipped gym featuring weight benches, dumbbells, and various exercise machines.

Fitness & Weight Room

The hotel's collection of free weights, benches, a multi-station workout machine, functional trainer, elliptical, treadmill, and stationary bicycle work in tandem to give you a great workout during your Chincoteague vacation.

A sliding weight bar scale, fresh towels, and full bathroom round out the fitness & weight room offerings at Refuge Inn.

The fitness room is open 8am to 10pm daily, and 8am to 9pm between Thanksgiving and Easter.

Therapeutic Dry Sauna

The dry sauna at Refuge Inn is a fantastic way for you to sit back and relax. Heat helps open pores, cleanse the body, and lowers your pulse and blood pressure. Sauna sessions, especially when coupled with swimming, help to improve complexion, reduce stress, relieve pain, and relax muscles.

The sauna key is available to adult guests at the front desk from 8am to 10pm daily, and 8am to 9pm between Thanksgiving and Easter.

EV Charging Station

We are glad to offer a Tesla charger and a Universal Electric Vehicle charger to our guests. There is a reserved parking space near the charger for your use. Once your vehicle is charged, please vacate the space so others can utilize the charger.

The Tesla charger is also available for visitors to the island who are not staying with us (No locals, homeowners, or residents, please.) Please stop by the front desk upon arrival and leave us your cell phone number and license plate, so we can call you in the event that there are any issues. Once your vehicle is charged, please vacate the space so others can utilize the charger.
