Halloween on Chincoteague is small-town and mostly happens on Main Street. Come the weekend before, the weekend of, or stay for both.
The Weekend Before Halloween
Thursday
Check in and have an early dinner at The Village, where the Conner family has been frying oysters for more than 40 years. They recommend reservations. Then come back for a swim in our heated pool.
Friday
Take the bikes out, or walk the beach at low tide and look for shells. Blackfin Island Grill is right across the street for dinner. Afterward, see what's playing at the Island Theatre on Main Street.
Saturday
Get coffee at Amarin and walk over to the Chincoteague Island Farmers & Artisans Market on Church Street. It runs on Saturday mornings through the end of October, and it usually has a costume parade near Halloween.
Spend the afternoon on Main Street, and stop in at Sandy Sky's.
During the Week
The Museum of Chincoteague Island has hosted a Halloween scavenger hunt and movie night in past years. Check their calendar if you're here midweek. Island Creamery has had pumpkin pie ice cream and apple cider sorbet in the fall.
Halloween Weekend
On Halloween evening the Historic Main Street Merchants hold Trick or Treat Main Street. Families go shop to shop in costume, and the library on the route gives out free children's books.
If you're here on the last Friday of October, the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance's Story Swap is ghost stories that month. The Cultural Alliance also puts on a fall dinner theatre, usually in early November.
For dinner, call Bill's Prime at (757) 336-5831 for a reservation. The Better. food truck on Maddox Boulevard is another good choice. Get the Potato Rocket.
During the day, call ahead to schedule a visit to the Captain Timothy Hill House. On select fall Saturdays you can climb the Assateague Lighthouse. To see the ponies from the water, book a tour with Cowboy Cruise Company. They run pony tours year round.
